Order Coleoptera
(coleo, sheath; ptera, wings)
The largest order of insects. More than a quarter million species of beetle have been described. Most beetles have 2 pairs of wings, the outer pair are thick and act as protection sheath for the more delicate inner pair. Like butterflies and moths, beetles undergo a 'complete' metamorphosis, spending the immature stages of their lives as grubs. .
